5 Big Tips to Help Keep The Plumber At Bay

So many times we take our drains, pipes, disposals, and septic systems for granted… that is, until something happens to make them stop working properly. To keep your systems working at their best, you need to make sure you take care of them properly, even before you need to call the plumber. Here are 5 ways you can keep the plumber at bay all while keeping your drains and pipes happy!

Remain Vigilant – Probably the most important thing you can do to prevent your drains from clogging is to make sure that they’re corrected before things worsen. Have you noticed that your drains are a bit sluggish? Take the necessary steps to unclog it. Toilet not flushing properly? Get it checked out. Remember, these aren’t issues that will be fixed the more you use it. In reality, the more you use it, the more you will tax your already overworked plumbing system.

Don’t Treat Your Disposal Like Your Trashcan – If you’re regularly scraping off the scraps from your plates into your garbage disposals, then you should work to break that habit as soon as you can. You should avoid dumping fats and cooking oils down the drain because they can cause a blockage when they solidify. Additionally, avoid throwing stringy, fibrous, starchy, and hard-to-grind foods down the drain because they can wrap around the blades and keep the motor from turning. That includes banana peels, celery, carrot and potato peelings, poultry skins, and pumpkin.

Run Cold Water Correctly – When you’re disposing of your scraps, make sure that you run cold water for at least 15 seconds before and after you turn on the disposal. Also, make sure that the disposal is running before you add your scraps.

Used Drain Screens In the Bathroom – This is a good tip to help you filter hair and clumps of soap, which are infamous for clogging pipes. Remember to clean out the screens between showers to keep it clear of debris and working at its optimum level.

Take Care of Your Toilet – The toilet is used to flush down only two things – waste and toilet paper. Never flush anything else down the toilet, no matter what. Instead, make sure that you keep a lined trashcan near the toilet to hold things like feminine products, cotton balls, Q-tips, facial tissues, and baby wipes.
